Abstract:The Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ) was founded in 1922 by Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism. Rabbi Kaplan developed his own prayerbook in 1945 which was first used at the SAJ. This prayerbook contains many traditional prayers in Hebrew and English, as well as readings and meditations in English.

Organizational History

The Society for the Advancement of Judaism (SAJ) was founded in 1922 by Rabbi Mordechai Kaplan, the founder of Reconstructionist Judaism. Rabbi Kaplan developed his own prayerbook which was published and first used at the SAJ in 1945. The SAJ was the first Reconstructionist synagogue and today it is affiliated with both the Reconstructionist and the Conservative movements. The synagogue is still in use today in its original location on West 86th St. in Manhattan.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of the provisional Sabbath prayerbook from the Society for the Advancement of Judaism at 15 West 86th St in New York City. The pages are held together in a binder. The prayerbook consists of many traditional prayers in Hebrew and English, as well as readings and meditations in English based on Scripture, Abraham Joshua Heschel's writings and other sources.
