Abstract:The collection consists of a record book from a butcher's shop near Kisvarda, Hungary between the years 1928-1944. It lists the type of meat sold, the date of the sale and to whom it was sold. Kisvarda was a small town in northeast Hungary. It had been a thriving Jewish community from 1796 until the Jewish community was deported to Auschwitz by the Nazis in the spring of 1944.

Historical Note

The record book belonged to a butcher shop near Kisvarda, in Hungary. Kisvarda (called Kleinwardein in Yiddish) was a town in northeast Hungary. It had been a thriving Jewish community from 1796, with several Jewish elementary schools and a yeshiva. 25-30 percent of the local population was Jewish. The Jewish community of Kisvarda was deported to Auschwitz by the Nazis in the spring of 1944.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of a record book from a butchers shop near Kisvardai, Hungary between the years 1928-1944. It lists the type of meat sold, the date of the sale and to whom it was sold. A stamp across the cover of the book reads "Kisvardai Aut. Izr. Hitközség," meaning the Autonomous Orthodox Israelite Community of Kisvarda.
