Biographical Note

Coen Rood was a Dutch Jewish tailor who survived 37 months in Nazi forced labor camps. He wrote a report about his wartime experiences for the War Documentation Center of the Netherlands, and a book in German titled Wenn Ich es Nicht Erzahlen Kann, Mus Ich Weinen. In 1942 Rood was deported to Camp Conrad in the Netherlands, and from there moved to a number of other camps, spending most of the war interned at Gleiwitz-Steigern labor camp in Poland. He was freed in Germany in May 1945 and reunited with his wife Bep, a nurse, who survived the war in hiding.

Scope and Contents

The collection contains a report written by Coen Rood in Amsterdam during the period 1945-1949 for the War Documentation Center of the Netherlands. The report, titled "Report 1942 to 1945," recounts Rood's experiences as a prisoner in 11 forced labor camps during that period. The 523-paged report includes detailed recollections of death marches, and Rood's time spent in Camp Conrad in the Netherlands, Flossenburg in Germany, and Gleiwitz-Steigern in Poland, as well as a number of other camps. The report also includes an overall timeline of his wartime experiences.
