Organizational Overview

The Board of Jewish Education was founded in New York in 1917 as the Jewish Education Committee. Over the years it absorbed other Jewish educational organizations into its framework. In 1970, the Jewish Education Committee changed its name to the Board of Jewish Education of Greater New York (BJE). The BJE’s purpose was to enable Jewish education in New York by training teachers, providing job placement, operating schools, and developing curricula.
