Historical Note

Agudath Israel was founded in 1912 in Kattowitz, Poland and grew to be the political, communal, and cultural voice of those Orthodox Jews who believed in a traditional approach to Jewish life and rejected Zionism and the trappings of modernity. Its membership consisted of various Hasidic and Lithuanian Rabbis, including such notable figures as the Chafetz Chaim and the Gerrer Rebbe. The Agudah held considerable power in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust, and even elected representatives to the Polish Parliament. It founded Jewish educational institutions in Europe, and after World War II, across North America and Israel.

Scope and Contents

The collection consists of printed material published and distributed by Agudath Israel in Europe and Israel. Included are bulletins, parshat ha-shavua (weekly Torah portion) sheets, press releases, schedules of events, and broadsides from European branches in Paris, Vienna, Czechoslovakia, Germany, Hungary, and Romania, and a 1942 diary of activities and an undated "Leaders' Guide" from the London office. The Israeli material consists primarily of broadsides relating to political and communal issues, bulletins from Agudat Israel Vaʻad ha-Poʻel (1940-1945), and items relating to education of youth, such as B'nos material (1948, 1952), and bulletins of ha-Noar ha-Agudati (1942-1943).
